The Secret History of the Sultan in Abscon
“The Secret History of the Sultan in Abscon” is a screenplay by Bahram Beyzaie, written in 1983 and published in 1985.
The story revolves around the Mongol invasion of Iran and the subsequent escape of Ala al-Din Muhammad Khwarazmshah to the island of Abscon. The narrative unfolds in a courtroom on the island, where the spirits of the dead act as plaintiffs and judges, and Sultan Muhammad Khwarazmshah stands accused.
The play reveals the atrocities of his reign, depicting his confrontation with the manifestations of his actions in the form of maimed and bloodied figures. Ultimately, he is abandoned by his followers, mistakenly kills his loyal companion Amir Qutluq, and is condemned to death.
